Camping in the rain is a skill but it’s one that’s worth mastering, especially if you live here in the U.K where it rains all the time, even during the summer months.
If you’ve been looking forward to getting away, there is no need to let some inclement weather spoil your fun. One of the best things you can do is be prepared, so plan as though it might rain and then it’s a bonus if it doesn’t!

1. Check Your Tent Before You Leave
If you’re camping in the U.K you’ll know that you can never trust the British weather, so putting your tent up a few weeks before you leave and checking it’s waterproof is a must-do. Any small leaks can then be repaired and you’re good to go for your camping holiday.
2. Always Pack A Waterproof
It’s currently July and I think we’ve already seen a crazy amount of rain this month. Packing waterproofs is an essential part of camping. Personally, I like to take my main waterproof jacket and very light roll-up version too, just to be on the safe side and as one dries out much quicker than the other.
3. Invest In an Extra Tarp
There is so much you can do if you have an extra tarp, including creating some shelter from the rain should you need to. Other uses can include a makeshift hammock, sun shelter, or for using as an extra groundsheet if the ground is very wet or muddy.
4. Take A Tent Repair Kit
Having a tent repair kit is one of my top camping in the rain hacks. Easily repair any small bits of damage to your tent and prevent water from getting in.
5. Bring Some Bungee Cord
Bungee cord can have a multitude of uses when it comes to camping, and one of those is to use for a make-shift washing line once the rain stops. You can then use it to dry your wet clothes and towels. Don’t forget to pack a few pegs too!
6. Buy Quick Drying Towels
Quicking trying towels are a must for any camper. If you do a lot of sport you may already have some but if not, they are definitely worth investing in if you go camping regually. See these microfiber towels on Amazon as a guide for what to look out for.
7. Take Flip Flops or Crocs
Having something you can slip on quickly if you need to pop outside the tent or use the toilets is much better than having to put your feet back in wet hiking boots. It’ll also give your boots more time to dry out as you’re not getting them wet again all the time.
8. Take Some Carrier Bags
We’ve all got a cupboard full of them right? Carrier bags can come in super handy when you find yourself on a wet camping trip. They can be used to put wet clothes in so they don’t make anything else wet and they can be used to keep things dry too.
9. Add a Keyring to Your Zip
When you’re trying to get back into your tent in the midst of a rainstorm, there is nothing worse than having to fiddle about with the zip. Adding a small keyring to the zip makes it much easy to find and grab hold of and therefore easier to open your tent with too.
10. Pack Extra Socks
I’ve mentioned in previous posts how my feet are always cold and it’s even worse when they’re wet. Always pack more socks than you think you’ll need and a cosy pair of slipper socks that only get worn in the tent where it’s dry.
11. Pick The Best Spot
If there’s bad weather forecast you’re going to want to be as close to the toilets and any other amenities on the campsite as possible. You may also want to look for the most sheltered spot or where you can pitch your tent entrance facing away from the wind direction.
12. Dry Out Your Tent
While it might not be possible to dry your tent out fully before leaving, make sure you do this when you get home, even if you need to wait a day or two for some better weather! This is the best way to ensure your tent will be fully usable and ready to go for your next camping trip.
