This weekend we took a lovely walk up on the Quantock Hills.
The Quantock hills are one of my favourite places to go walking, but it had been rather a long time since we’d been up here.
This was mainly due to the fact we have a toddler, so currently our weekend trips revolve around trips to local parks and other more child friendly destinations that also cater to our six year old.
The last time we walked this particular area, our little boy was only a few months old and he was still in a baby carrier which made life much easier!
We have considered purchasing a toddler carrier but I’m honestly not sure how happy he would be in it and of course these routes aren’t particularly buggy friendly.
At almost two, he’s been walking for almost a year, so this we decided to give a walk up towards Hurley Beacon a try.
He did well for around 15 minutes, however he did quickly get tired, so me and his Dad took turns carrying him.
Despite this, we did have a lovely time and it was great blow away the cobwebs with our sunny, but slightly breezy walk.
While on this occasion we weren’t lucky enough to see any wild horses (pictured below from a previous walk) we did encounter some horse riders who were happy to stop and chat to us for a while.

We also saw plenty of other wildlife, including the many sheep that live there.
With this type of walk, we always try to make it interesting (and a little bit educational) for a six-year-old daughter, by looking out for different types of flora and fauna, animal footprints and even different types of animal droppings.
The toddler was quite happy just picking up rocks!

One thing I love about walking up on the Quantocks is the views, although I must admit the current work at Hinkley Point, while necessary is rather an eyesore.
That said, I am sure in the other direction we could see steam from the West Somerset Vintage Railway which was just lovely.
Although our walk wasn’t quite as long as we would have liked, we all enjoyed getting some fresh air up on the Quantocks!
As the weather improves, I’m looking forward to days out at nearby Ramscombe Picnic area where the children will love splashing about the stream and we can take a walk down to the nearby cafe for an Ice Cream.
Once our children are much older, I’d love to spend more time exploring this area of outstanding natural beauty.
There are surely routes which can incorporate a stop-off for a lovely pub lunch!
Have you ever visited the Quantocks hills? Living locally we feel very lucky to have this area right on our doorstep.
