Three images, a unicorn, a wooden play area and small train with three people on

Are you looking to visit Pennywell Farm? I’ll take you through our recent visit, letting you know exactly what we thought of this attraction, which can be found in Devon.

We recently visited Pennywell Farm as a group of three adults and two children, ages two and seven.

What Did We Do At Pennywell Farm?

Pennywell Farm offers plenty of attractions that are suitable for the whole family.

As well as play areas, bouncy castles, rides and lots of animal petting, there are also various events throughout the day which include a family fun show, bottle feeding the goats and piggy racing (this was our seven-year-old’s favourite thing she did all day!)

We visited during the Festival of the Unicorn, which added some extra magic to our trip.

Rides – Rainbow Railway, Red Rocket and Tractor Ride

If you’re a thrill seeker, then Pennywell Farm might not be for you, however, there are three small rides, two of which are suitable for the whole family.

Rainbow Railway

The rainbow railway is a short train ride around a track where you can spot some animals (both real and fake) and count the rainbows. This ride is perfect for little ones, and parents can hop on too if needed.

The staff member working on this ride when we visited was especially lovely, and great with the kids, offering stickers and high fives!

The Red Rocket

The red rocket is a chain of individual carriages pulled around by a tractor. It is only suitable for children aged four and up.

Our daughter loved this ride, and again, the staff member running it was lovely and great at interacting with the children.

She did this several times throughout the day as the queue was short.

Tractor Ride

I love a tractor when visitng a farm so we hopped on the trailer together for a quick look around some of the farm.

We saw some highland cows and some donkeys in the distance as well as some model animals.

To be honest, we found the tractor ride rather short and would have preferred a longer journey to see more animals.

It’s worth noting that the rides do all shut over part of the day – I assume this is to do with staff needing breaks, but it was disapointing it all seemed to be at the same time.

Animal Handling

One of the things I loved most about our visit to Pennywell Farm was being able to interact with so many different animals.

Some baby goats in a farmyard pen

We bottle-fed the goats at feeding time, as well as giving them goat feed as we walked around their pens.

We gave some lovely donkeys a good brush in the courtyard area aswell as visitng some out in their paddock.

A highlight of the day was having cuddeles with some piglets, who enjoyed sleeping on our laps. While in this area we also petted some other animals including rabbits, geanea pigs and a mouse.

Outdoor Play Areas

The children enjoyed playing in the many outdoor play areas. I especially liked trying out the outdoor assault course with my daughter.

While there are plenty of toddler play areas, none of them are enclosed, making it tricky if you have a little one who likes to make a run for it.

It was also disappointing that the lovely new play area, obviously aimed at older children, didn’t have anything nearby for under-threes.

Viewing Point

Another thing we loved about Pennywell Farm is the incredible setting, with stunning views out across a valley.

These are even better when you head over the wooden bridge and up to the viewing point.

Indoor Bouncy Castle and Slide

If the weather takes a turn while you’re at Pennywell Farm you can always head indoors to use the bouncy castle and slide.

While this area is nice, I can imagine it gets pretty packed on busy or wet days, as it was pretty crowded on a low-season Saturday.

I also don’t think it offers quite enough for kids to do – I hate to say it, but I think a soft play area would be much better here.

I didn’t try them, but I must say the pizzas being served in this area smell amazing!

Picnic

With a two fairly fussy eaters in our party, we decided our best was take a picnic with us to Pennywell Farm.

And honestly, I’m glad we did, as some of the views from the many picnic areas are stunning, and it was lovely to take a break in the spring sunshine.

If the weather doesn’t fair quite so well on your visit, there is a covered picnic area you can use.

Piggy Racing

Watch four little piggies race through a course with jumps, hedges and even some wellies to run through.

This was a great even and the whole family really enjoyed it. Plus all the pigs have fun names – our favourite was Voldersnort.

Meeting A Unicorn

Another highlight of the day for our seven-year-old was meeting a real-life unicorn called Merlin.

There are also a few attractions we didn’t end up doing such as the maze and some of the events that went on throughout the day.

One thing we did struggle with was the pathways around Pennywell Farm. Many of these were tricky to push our toddler in his buggy and being a venue aimed at young families this we assumed the site would be more accessable.

Tips For Visiting Pennywell Farm

Get There Early – It’s worth noting that this attraction opens at 9 am, which is perfect if you’re holidaying in the area and your little ones are up early.

Take A Picnic – If you’re on a budget, take a picnic and enjoy the views while enjoying your lunch.

Bring A Towel – or a small blanket for piggy cuddles. Purchasing them from the shop costs £3.

Take A Pic – Take a picture of the board that shows all the events going on throughout the day so you can easily refer back to it later.

Is Pennywell Farm Good Value For Money?

While Pennywell farm certainly has plenty to offer and we did enjoy our day our here, I do think there are other attractions in the area which are simialry priced and offer a lot more to do.

Is Pennywell Farm Good For Older Children?

Pennywell Farm overall is suited to children of all ages, however, older children and teens might find there’s not enough to keep them interested for more than a couple of hours, especially if they’re not particually interested in animals.

Overall, we really enjoyed our visit to Pennywell Farm and it’s a great attraction for families with young children.
